The goals of the program for grades Pre-K to 5 are:

(1) To develop an appreciation for mathematics.

(2) To enhance and challenge a student’s mathematical skills.

(3) To foster a dialog of mathematics between student and caregiver.

How to Participate

  • Select and print (single sided) your student’s grade level assignments.
  • The assignments alternate between Starburst (25 points) and Superstars (50 point) assignments.
  • It is recommended that students complete the assignments in order, however, students can skip around.
  • Please print out all 12 assignments and staple each individually. As an added safeguard, make sure your student’s name and teacher is on every page.
  • Students can work at their own pace. There is no late work.
  • The first "due date" is the end of October.
  • Turn in completed work in the PTA bin in the main hall.

Completed student work can be turned in via the Math Superstars Drop Box. It is in main lobby. The scored papers will be kept and prizes for completion will be handed out. Prizes will be distributed the following week (or close to it) through students’ homeroom teachers.

Starburst vs Superstar Worksheets

Starbursts (25 points) vary in size and are closer to grade level curriculum. Most Starbursts are single topic with varying degrees of difficulty.

Superstar (50 points) are usually above grade level and offer a higher level of challenge for students.

Recognition & Awards

All participating students will earn a “star” and their points will be posted on the Math Superstars bulletin board outside the cafeteria.
Top Scores in each grade will also be posted.

0-50 points               Participation Level, small prize

When available, Math Superstars offers additional point opportunities at STEM night in February. Students who cannot attend, can email the superstars coordinator for an additional assignment. Please keep the graded worksheets and projects in case there is a discrepancy in the final tally at the end of the year.

Caregivers Role

Math Superstars is an opportunity for students to engage in higher level mathematics and problem solving. This is an optional program. Not all students complete all the assignments.

The parent’s role is to encourage and facilitate problem-solving. Worksheets and projects will contain new concepts outside of the classroom curriculum. If your child needs help with these problems, please explain the concept using different numbers than those actually given.

Understand that these problems are above grade level: they require substantial effort from your child, and from you. Attempting to solve problems quickly will rarely result in success. A parent should NOT give the answer or show the child exactly how to solve the problem.  We encourage parents to allow your child to think through the problem and come up with an answer independently.

Try to be positive in your interactions and allow your child to make mistakes. Even if the child does not get the correct answer, partial credit may be awarded for effort. AFTER the worksheets have been graded and returned, we encourage parents to sit down with their child and go over any problems they missed.

Participation in the program acknowledges a parent's understanding that everyone is on the honor system. In other words, parents should NOT solve the problems, but rather they should guide the child in the process. Finally, the scores received do NOT count towards the school grades since Math Superstar is a PTA-sponsored program.

*Special note for parents of Pre-K and K students: Your little ones probably can’t read well yet. They cannot work on the problems on their own. You should read the problems to them, and then guide them towards understanding the problem, and finally towards an answer. A good way of doing this is to ask them a few questions similar to the ones on the worksheets, and show how they are solved; then you can let them solve the worksheet problems without your direct help.
